From Nordic drones and vibrant new compositions from the rock/electronic and classical/chamber worlds to the long awaited completion of Philip Glass’ twenty Études for Piano and David Lang’s interpretation of the voice of Death itself, New York based composer Nico Muhly’s upcoming weekend of musical exploration, A Scream and an Outrage, is not one that will allow itself to be restrained by genres.
In a who’s who of new music, A Scream and an Outrage promises to be a rare opportunity to see a new generation of young composers and musicians share the bill with the pioneers and innovative artists that have been transcending the boundaries of music for decades.
Preparing us for this exciting meeting of musical minds, the latest Barbican Contemporary Music podcast double-bill introduces us to some of the artists performing throughout the weekend, sharing their inspirations and even a few bars of the boundary defying music we can expect to hear throughout the six sessions.
Part 1: featuring Nico Muhly, David Lang, Paola Prestini, Conor O’Brien (Villagers) and Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire).
Part 2: featuring David Lang, Shana Worden, Calder Quartet, So Percussion and cameo appearances from Philip Glass and Steve Reich.
