From Madonna and Dita Von Teese to Cindy Sherman, Gaultier is perhaps best known for his corset designs. Bringing what was once an item of female confinement and restriction into the modern day, Gaultier made fashion history through his unique reinventions for women – and for men.
We spoke to fashion historian Valerie Steele about what Gaultier’s characteristic shake up of tradition meant for fashion and find out more about his relationship with his most famed corset-wearer, Madonna.
