Exploring the Barbican Box

23 schools, 555 young people, 9 mentors – 1 Box.

Earlier this year, we welcomed back innovative theatre company, and pioneers of collaborative theatre making, Complicite, to curate a unique box with one objective – to help inspire and create exciting theatre with young people throughout London.

‘The Box can inspire creation at any age…it is a box which creates meaning.’ Teacher

Having explored identity, heritage and a search for ‘home’ in their own theatre work, Complicite chose the theme of ‘migration’ for this year’s Barbican Box. Balls, cassette tapes, a battered suitcase, old photographs, sticks of bamboo – the props and prompts were all there, and soon, with the help of the Complicite mentors, stories began to take shape and theatre began to be made – all inspired by the contents of a wooden box.

‘Barbican Box has really helped to open our minds and get us to understand each other’s backgrounds.’ Jasvinder, The Urswick School
