Wikimania Gets Social

Last week, the Barbican was taken over by over 4,000 delegates from around the world as Wikipedia hosted their annual event, Wikimania in London for the first time.

With a packed programme of keynote speakers, workshops, events and socials plus a pre-conference hackathon in our Conservatory, the centre was alive with the buzz of creativity and excitement as the ‘Wikipedian’ community united for this special event.

All keynote presentations from the weekend, including Amnesty International’s Salil Shetty, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales,  ‘citizen scientist’ Jack Andraka, Code Club’s Claire Sutcliffe and more were recorded and are available to watch online.

In keeping with the power of the online community, we gathered some of the weekend’s highlights, as seen through the eyes (and keyboards) of the Wikimania London attendees. From the Wikipedia ethos and its role in education to free knowledge and monkey selfies – we look back over a thought-provoking weekend of ‘wiki-mania’.

There were thought-provoking questions…

There was inspiration…

There was music…

There was celebration…

There were monkeys…
