Before the crowds arrive, before the audiences take their seats, we invited a group of Instagrammers to join us for an early morning tour to explore the Barbican as part of Instagram’s fascinating #empty movement where buildings invite photographic explorers into their spaces to capture those rarely seen, and rarely unpopulated, moments.
From the Theatre to the Hall, the Conservatory to the Estate, here are just a selection of some of our favourite shots from #emptybarbican.

#manwiththeunionjackumbrella 67 : #emptybarbican Today I was lucky enough to be invited by @barbicancentre to explore backstage areas and go on a guided tour. I was in my element in this brutalist beauty. #umbrellaplanet #loves_umbrella #thisislondon #toplondonphoto#gf_uk #citypicz #cityofcities #global_family #gf_daily #ic_thecity #ig_europe #wu_europe #ig_select #insta_crew #picoftheday #photooftheday #bestoftheday #ig_britishisles #ukpotd #timeoutlondon #shutup_london #britains_talent #ink361 A photo posted by Neil Andrews (@mumhad1ofthose) on

The best, most colourful staircase in town. I’ve done the backstage tour @barbicancentre before as a paying customer with @geerhee during which we probably tested the patience of the tour guide and the other, non-Instagramming people on the tour by dawdling and taking pictures. I loved this staircase then but we only got to see a few floors (each is a different colour). This time we got to do the whole thing from top to bottom with plenty of time to do as we wished! #emptybarbican A photo posted by Dolly Brown (@londonlivingdoll) on
Vertigram. So high above the stage yesterday. @barbicancentre #emptybarbican A photo posted by @iikkyu on
One of the things our attention was drawn to on our architectural tour of @barbicancentre was the painstaking attention paid to every last detail by the architects, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon. Every fixture throughout the estate and arts centre coheres with the overall concept and design, including these vents. We also found out that all of the concrete used in the structure was poured smooth and chiselled by hand There is a lot of concrete around the Barbican so that is slightly mind-boggling. #emptybarbican A photo posted by Dolly Brown (@londonlivingdoll) on
Thanks to @barbicancentre for a fantastic tour this morning. Had never appreciated before that the three towers are actually triangular in shape # #emptybarbican A photo posted by JOHNATHAN CRAWLEY (@johnathancrawls) on
