In the first of a new series of after hours concerts around the Barbican, we invited Black Top, the duo of multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson and pianist Pat Thomas, to perform in Basquiat: Boom For Real in our Art Gallery.
Inspired by Basquiat’s works that surrounded them, and the jazz musicians that inspired Basquiat, Black Top began improvising on vibraphone, theremin and drum machine.
Orphy Robinson describes their process:
‘The rhythms used were based on the syllables of words taken from the names of paintings, techniques and places associated with Basquiat and then put together to form the overall loop.
For example, say two bars of rhythm to syllables (Beat-Bop, Gen-e-sis | Fam-ous Ne-gro Ath-letes) which are then digitally looped (repeated) and layered with other such ideas which are then filtered through various FX and maybe then reversed, sped up or slowed down.’

Basquiat: Boom For Real takes place until 28 January 2018.
