The Barbican Box series is born from a curiosity about what we can learn by paying attention to each other’s visual perspectives and observing what we see around us.
This year’s project began with an exploration of the life and work of Jean-Michel Basquiat students and teachers explored the visual language he created, and developed their own work through collaborations with contemporary artists. Using Polaroid photography, text, and a host of materials inspired by Basquiat’s practice, students have created new work and shared their process through a series of DIY zines that communicate their own ideas and experiences.
Here are a few sample pages from the zines created by the students throughout this year’s Barbican Visual Arts Box.
